About Sihlwald Natural Forest Reserve

Sihlwald Natural Forest Reserve, located in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, spans a diverse landscape of primeval beech trees, mixed hardwoods, and rich understory vegetation. This unique forest is the last remaining part of the original wild forest that once covered the Swiss Mittelland region. Covering roughly 12 square kilometers, Sihlwald is characterized by its old-growth trees, deadwood habitats, and natural processes largely undisturbed by modern forestry. Historically managed by the city of Zurich since the 14th century, it was primarily used for timber and charcoal before becoming protected as a natural reserve in 2008. Today, it serves as a vital sanctuary for rare and endemic flora and fauna, including endangered species such as the Eurasian lynx, various woodpeckers, and diverse fungi. The forest's varied terrain and dense canopy offer multiple hiking and mountain biking trails, attracting outdoor enthusiasts who relish solitude and nature observation just minutes from Zurich's urban center. Visitors can enjoy guided nature walks, educational exhibits at the Sihlwald visitor center, and cross-country skiing in winter months. Highlights include the ancient giants like 300-year-old beeches, tranquil forest brooks, and the historical charcoal burners’ sites. The reserve exemplifies successful forest conservation blending cultural heritage with ecological preservation, making it a model for sustainable forestry in Europe.
